Nineteen Thirty-Eight

That was the year the Nazis marched into Vienna,
Superman made his debut in Action Comics,
Stalin was killing off his fellow revolutionaries,
The first Dairy Queen opened in Kakakee, Ill.,
As I lay in my crib peeing in my diapers.

" You must have been a beautiful baby, ! Bing Crosby sang.
A pilot the newspapers called Wrong Way Corrigan
Took off from New York heading for California
And landed instead in Ireland, as I watched my mother
Take a breast out of her blue robe and come closer.

There was a hurricane that September causing a movie theater
At Westhampton Beach to be lifted out sea.
People worried the world was about to end.
A fish believed to have been extinct for seventy million years
Came up in a fishing net off the coast of South Africa.

I lay in my crib as the days got shorter and colder,
And the first heavy snow fell in the night.
Making everything very quiet in my room.
I believe I heard myself cry for a long, long time.

Charles Simic

From the Lives of My Friends

What are the birds called
in that neighborhood
The dogs

There were dogs flying
from branch to
branch

My friends and I climbed up the telephone poles to sit on the power lines
dressed like crows

Their voices sounded like lemons

They were a smooth sheet
They grew

black feathers

Not frightening at all
but beautiful, shiny and
full of promise

What kind of light

is that ?

The lives of my friends spend all of thier time dying and coming back and dying
and coming back

They take a break in summer
to mow the piss
yellow lawns, blazing
front and
back

There is no break in winter

I fall in love with the sisters of my friends
All that yellow hair !
Their arms
blazing

They lick their fingers
to wipe my face
clean

of everything

And I am glad
I am glad
I am
so glad

We will all be shipped away
in an icebox
with the one word OYSTERS
painted on the outside

Left alone, for once

None of my friends wrote novels or plays, from the lives of my friends came
their lives

Here's what we did
we played in the yard outside
after dinner

and then
we were shipped away

That was fast -

stuffed
with

lemons

The Sink

She loves to talk on the phone
while washing the dinner dishes,
catching up long distance or
dealing with issues closer to home,
the reconnoitring with the long lost
or a recent so-and- so. She finds it
therapeutic, washing down
the aftermath. And that feeling
she gets in her stomach with a loved one's
prolonged silence. And under the sink
in the dark among the L-pipes, the confederate
socket wrenches, lost twine, wire lei,
sink funk, steel-wool lemnisci, leitmotifs
of oily sacraments, a broken compass forever
pointing southeast by east, mold codices,
ring tailed dust motes from days well served,
a fish-shaped flyswatter with blue horns,
fermented lemures, fiery spectres,
embottled spirit vapors swirling in the crude
next to the Soft Scrub, the vinegared
and leistered sealed in tins, delicious with saltines,
gleaned spikelets, used-up votives ....
In the back in the corner forgotten
an old coffee can of bacon fat
from a month of sinful Sunday,
a luna moth embossed, rising - a morning star.

My strip club

In my strip club
the girl crawl on stage
wearing overalls
and turtlenecks
then slowly pull on
gloves, ski masks
and hiking boots.
As the music slows,
they lick the pole
and for a tantalizing second
their tongues stick
because it's so cold.
They zip up parkas
and tie tight bows
under their hoods.
A big spender
can take one of my girls
into a back room
where he can clamp
her snowshoes.

Here and There

I feel nothing this morning
except the low hum of the ego,
a constant, shameless sound from deep in the rib cage.

I even keep forgetting my friend in surgery
at this very hour.

In other words, a perfect time to write
about clouds rolling in after a week of sun
and a woman beating laundry on a rock
in front of her house overlooking the sea -

all of which I am making up -
the clouds, the house, the woman, even the laundry.

Or take the lights strung in a harbor
that I once saw from the bow of a sailboat,
which seemed unreal at the time and more unreal now.

Even if I were there again at the railing
as I am sitting in a lawn chair today, who would believe it ?

Vast maple tree above me, are you really there ?
and you, open cellar door,
and you, vast sky with sun and a fading contrail -

no more real than the pretend city
where she lies now under the investigation lights,

an imaginary surgeon busy
breaking into the vault of her phantom skull.

Billy Collins

Valediction

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
That I could not have convinced you of this,

But these dark times are just like those dark times.
Yes, my sad acquaintance, each dark time is

Indistinguishable from the other dark times
Yesterday is as relentless as tomorrow.

There is no relief to be found in this,
But, please, " Yours is not the worst of sorrows."

Chekhov wrote that. He meant it as comfort
And I mean it as comfort, too, but why

Should you believe us? You didn't believe us.
You killed yourself because your last dark time

Was the worst, I guess, of many dark times.
None of me verse could have saved your life.

You were a stranger. You were dark and brief.
And I am humbled by the size of your grief.

Sherman Alexie

Soft Money

They're sexy
because they're needy,
which degrades them.

They're sexy because
they don't need you.

They're sexy because they pretend
not to need you,

but they're lying,
which degrades them.

They's re beneath you
and it's hot.

They're across the border,
rhymes with dancer -

they don't need
to understand

They're content to be
( not mean ),

which degrades them
and is sweet

They want to be
the thing-in-itself

and the thing-for-you -

Miss Thing -

but can't.

They want to be you,
but can't

which is so hot.
